Dear Star Lane,

                                                    A MARKETING PARABLE...

The Company chairman gave his report to the Company shareholders.

“During the year, your Board of Directors decided to carry out a limited exercise to test the appeal of our excellent product.   Firstly, our advertising agency prepared an attractive pamphlet publicising the special qualities of our product.  Secondly we chose a limited area containing a mix of the population.”

“The exercise then began, and a copy of the pamphlet was put through the letter-box of every house.  The eventual replies were split into categories and it was found that :

     (i)  .....% reacted with fury and put the pamphlet straight into their wheelie bin

(ii)  .....% were delighted but their enthusiasm soon faded away

(iii)  .... % put the pamphlet in their in-tray for later action, but it got lost in all the                        other blurb they received, and it got destroyed

(iv)  .....% were thrilled by our attractive product and have carried on buying it to                         varying extents ever since.

“Dear shareholders I offer this breakdown for your further thought”.

( With acknowledgement to Luke chapter 8,  verses 5 – 8 and 11 – 15 )

The Lord be with you,                Rev. Reginald Rooke

Resource Area News

Resource Area Prayer Meeting is changing - same time, different link:

This will continue Thursdays at 7pm while I’m on sabbatical, but moving from Zoom to Microsoft Teams. The log in details have been sent to those who are on the email list for Zoom, and it has been tested. It doesn’t need a host, so if you join and no-one is there, someone else will most likely appear by 7 o’clock.

Most people are still able to get in, and we apologise to those who can’t.

This month, please pray for our application to Synod for funding for the redevelopment of the hall, that it will be successful.

For our Resource Area churches, please pray:

~ for Westgate New Church and Whittlesey as decisions are made over future ministry

Thanks, Clare

Book Sale

We will be holding our annual Book Sale in the Church Hall on Sunday 30th November, at the usual time of 10am–2pm. This is timed to coincide with the Stamford Christmas Market in town, to help increase footfall for the Book Sale.

We have a couple of volunteers to run

The Book Sale during the Church Service and there will be refreshments available after the service.

Any volunteers to help set up, be in attendance or pack up would be welcomed.

Last Church Meeting on Sunday 5th October

The Minutes from this last Church meeting were sent out by e-mail last week to those on the Star News Distribution list.

We do recognise that not everyone has the means, or wants to, receive the Minutes by e-mail, so please do not feel left out or ignored from Church Meetings. So for those who would like a paper copy of the Minutes, please do contact Sue Samuels (Church Secretary) who will be happy to give you a copy.

One item in the meeting was to give an update on progress and a slight rethink on the plans for the Hall Renovation project that is ongoing. Since the meeting, we have been in contact with Paul Hutchings of PDG Architects, who has done some very preliminary sketches about an alternative plan for the back of the hall.

Brief Note from The Treasurer

Just a reminder for suggestions for charities for the Christmas Carol service donations. Lisa has received one nomination so far, but please do contact her if you have a good cause you’d like to propose.

Gents Toilet Downstairs

Please note that this is out of action until further notice. A previous or gradual water leak has caused the floor tiles to rise up, so it’s not safe to walk on. Please use either the upstairs toilet next to the upper kitchen, or else the ‘Disabled’ toilet next to the stage.

Christmas Tree Festival

Yes it's that time of year again! The Christmas Tree Festival will be at

St. John’s Church from Friday November 28th to Sunday 14th December. The event is

free to visit and donations will go to the charity group, Stamford Men's

Shed. The official opening will be on 28th November at 11 o'clock, to

which everyone is welcome. Pam and I will be decorating the tree for The

Usual Coffee morning held at our church hall. The Cards For Good Causes

are for sale in St. John's Church every day from 9.30am to 4.30pm , and

also open on Sundays 10am to 4pm.

Please do come and see all the beautiful trees representing so much of

Stamford life and smell the pines in this amazing church of St. John’s.

There are loads of cards to choose from and so many charities to support.

Thanks,                  Ishobel Macnab

Quote of the month:

“They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:

Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.

At the going down of the sun and in the morning

          We will remember them.”

Verse 4 of, “For The Fallen”, by Robert Laurence Binyon, September 1914
